In the $220 sets the battim are old peshutos that I repainted. As you can see from the picture (fig. 1) they look clean and nice. The parshios are checked by me and computer scanned.

Fig. 1: A freshly painted set of used tefillin. Although this set was sold it looks typical of used peshutos that I repaint and sell.

Fig.2: A new set of peshutos tefillin. The paint is sharper than in the used tefillin.

Another Reason To Buy Stark Tefillin Battim

If I wanted to produce a commercial to advertise Stark Tefillin Battim I couldn’t ask for more than what happened last night in my office.
I have a very good customer who purchased a set of tefillin from Eretz Yisroel. He found something for a bit less money than what I was showing him. Since he ordered them without seeing them, there was no way he could properly compare them to what I had shown him. Anyway, his son banged the shel rosh and he brought it to me for repair. He happened to come at the same moment that my battim macher (battim repair expert) was picking up some jobs from me. I showed him the dent and he quietly said to me, “These battim arn’t from you are they?” I replied that indeed they were not. He added, “Yeah, I could see that right away…” I cannot stress enough that to the untrained eye they may look the same as something which sells for $50 or $100 less, but once you start working with battim the difference becomes more clear every day. I want to stress that I am not saying that the battim that he bought are cheap battim, rather, if you are looking to purchase tefillin battim and you want them to be beautiful, strong, mehudar in halachah, and last a lifetime, than you need to be very clear about which tefillin battim you are using.

Purchasing Certified Used Tefillin
Purchasing a used set tefillin can be an excellent way to acquire a good set of tefillin at substantial savings. From time to time I come across a set of used tefillin which I feel is a good investment for somebody who would like to own a good set of tefillin but isn’t in a financial situation to buy new. Are there any drawbacks to used tefillin? Yes, there is one thing you need to understand: I can’t guarantee that the sofer who wrote the parshios has s’michah, or if he understands the halachot of writing tefillin. In other words, when I check a set of tefillin I check what I see in front of me. I can’t know if the sofer did everything correctly while he was writing them. For example, tefillin must be written in order. You can’t add a letter that you forgot to put in after the tefillin are written. When I sell new sets of tefillin I check out the soferim and I make sure they know the halachos thoroughly. You’ll notice that the title of this post is ‘Certified Used Tefillin’. I am certifying that everything that I can see is kosher and properly made. Most sets of used tefillin do not meet my standards and I will not offer them for sale! I reject any used tefillin and mezuzos that I am not completely comfortable with. That being said, you may decide that a used set is what you are looking for. I will lists sets that I have available and that I consider a good buy. Everything that I offer will be checked by me and I will provide as much information (including photos upon request) as you need in order to make the best decision possible.
5/26/09 Used Gassos Tefillin For Sale
I have a used set of Gassos Tefillin. This means that the battim are strong and thick. The parshios are good, and thoroughly checked by me as well as computer scanned. I just painted the retzuous (straps) with a nice new coat of shiny black paint. They are looking quite good. If you are interested in this set but you want brand new retzuous I can add them in for $30.00 (which is a $20 discount). This is a set that will last for decades and decades (provided you take care of them, of course (like no scuba diving with them on)). This is a great way to get Gassos, and save about $200. I have checked out the battim very carefully, and certify them to be kosher. $650.00 Contact me for more info.
6/1/09 Used Peshutos Tefillin Not For Sale
Today I was checking a set of used tefillin parshios that looked as if they had very good potential to be an inexpensive set for somebody. Unfortunately during my examination several problems turned up. Even though one of the problems was not that serious, when taken in the context of not just one problem, I concluded that this would not be an appropriate set of tefillin even as a last resort for those lacking funds. So the bottom line is these Used Peshutos Tefillin are Not For Sale. How much would they have been for sale for? About $180. If this sounds like what you are looking for, contact me and as soon as I have something available I will let you know.
Why Shouldn’t Tefillin be an “Add to Cart” Item?

I can’t think of any purchase more personal than the purchase of tefillin. Don’t you want to know who wrote them, and that he is the kind of person you can relate to. For example, if you are a Belzer Chasid wouldn’t you like to know that he can relate to Belzer Chasidus? Don’t you want the sofer to talk to you and your son, explaining to them how the tefillin are made, and how much kidushah (holiness) they have? You will want me to teach you how to put them on and care for them, won’t you? Don’t you want to know that I know the sofer who wrote them, and that I trust him like a brother?
Give me a call. Let’s talk about your upcoming tefillin ownership.

Should Tefillin Cost More than a New Suit?

I was learning a piece from Reb Yonason Eibshitz this morning that confirmed a thought that I had about the price of tefillin. He writes about how much money people would spend for a hat (even back then), how the hat had to be perfect, exactly what was in style, not even a drop too tall, short, etc. Shoes, he notes, are something that people will pay twice what they are worth even though they only last a few years. But when it comes to tefillin, those same people want to save money at the expense of doing the mitzvah in the best way possible. Back then a good set of tefillin lasted 10 or 15 years, whereas nowadays the kind of tefillin that I enjoy selling will last a lifetime–guaranteed. If you spent even $1,000 or $15,000 on tefillin and divide that price by the number of years a lifetime set will last, you will see that expensive sets of tefillin are quite cost effective. If a person spends $1,000.00 on tefillin and uses them for fifty years that comes to only $20.00 per year!
